Yemen ~
An Adventure to the Land of 'Arabian Nights'

back to Yemen overview page
MAP

Yemen is a timeless land steeped in history and shrouded in legend. Known by the Romans as Felix Arabia, this austere world at the foot of the Arabian Peninsula is the birthplace of empires and kingdoms that were built on the incense trade. Sir Richard Burton passed this way in the 19th century recapturing its legends in "A Thousand and One Nights". Sana'a, the capital, is a designated World Heritage site with wonderfully crafted and decorated mud-brick houses, colorful bazaars and beautiful mosques. Although the ancient kingdoms have given way to a slightly more modern world, Yemen remains a place of mountains and deserts, as well as cliff top fortresses and villages, hanging gardens and a traditional culture of warmth and hospitality that is rarely found elsewhere.

Lost Frontiers' program focuses on Yemen's ancient past and traditional tribal cultures that date back to the time of the Old Testament. This is a rare opportunity to visit a land time forgot and to meet the villagers, tribesmen and nomads that make up Yemen's fascinating cultural tapestry. The trip will be led by Barbara Wagner who has specialized for years in tribal and cultural travel and whose personal relationships with the Yemeni people serve to open doors to their traditions and culture.
